Bamboefietsen.nl was born out of a passion for cycling, Africa and fair trade.
Joep, the founder of bamboefietsen.nl, heard of the existence of bamboo bicycles in 2009. When he realized that in the Netherlands, bicycle country par excellence, these bicycles were not available, his idea was born. Joep was going to bring these bicycles to the Netherlands! But not just that, he wanted to focus on Fairtrade principles and bring jobs to Africa. So we have beautiful bikes and they have a job! Win-win!
In 2010 he left for Ghana to meet Craig Calfee and a number of builders that Craig had taught to build frames. Since then, Joep has been importing and distributing these bicycle frames to bicycle shops via eerlijkekansen.nl and directly to the consumer via bamboefietsen.nl.
